How mental illness affects emotions and memory

Mentor: N/A

I am currently studying about the effect of mental illness on the brain, and more specifically how it affects emotions and memory. Emotions are influenced by a person’s mood, relationships, and setting. Mental illness plays a major role in affecting emotions; they can make you feel all sorts of different feelings (like being nervous, and depressed). So if mental illnesses can affect emotions, I want to know if they can affect memories. Memories are often remembered with a certain feeling which makes the event more memorable. But can that memory be changed or almost corrupted because of mental illness later on in life? Emotional memories are associated with two things. First is how it is perceived (arousal); this is like where the memory was and how things are said. The second thing is what the memory was (valence), whether it was a good or bad memory.
